Great is the Enemy of Good

“Good to Great” is a terrific book that should be in the library of every small business owner. While the principles enshrined in the book are universally valid, for so many small businesses owners the journey that they need to take can be more accurately described as “mediocre to good”.

What I have found is that all too often "great" simply gets in the way of developing a plan, and can even be an excuse for poor execution. At its most basic, having an adequate plan that is well implemented will always outperform a great plan that never gets accomplished. An adequate plan that is well implemented will always outperform a great one that never gets off the drawing board.

This is one of the few areas in business where mediocrity can be your friend... but be very careful not to misunderstand this point! Mediocrity in the plan may be acceptable. Mediocrity in the execution never is!
